With the continuous development and innovation of electronic devices, various types of earphones are not only used for listening to music and watching movies, but also for Studio Headphones, Airline Headphones, Noise Cancelling Headphones for noise isolation, Gaming Headsets for playing games, Sport Earphone, and so on. Now there's a new piece of research into Headband Headphones technology that could be used as a medical aid.
Imagine a wireless headset with a $200 fee that has the sensitivity to capture brain signals to diagnose epilepsy or to help people with attention problems to learn more effectively. The headset was developed by Panasonic and IMEC and Holst Centre.
The development team introduced the wireless headset model in 2010, and this time the product demonstrates greater precision and flexibility, and is easier to use. The new headphones replace the passive electrodes with active power, and the number of electrodes can be increased as demand increases, not only reducing interference, but also enabling better tracking and motion artifact correction.
The headset is entering the clinical trial phase. Current measurements show that its signal is very similar to the signals in the more expensive and cumbersome cable systems currently in use.
Wireless electroencephalogram (EGG) headphones were developed jointly by IMEC, Panasonic and Holst Centre in the Netherlands. The headset continuously records up to 8 EEG signals.
In addition, IMEC also announced that it is working with Tokyo Electron Ltd. (TEL) to develop imagers and sensors for in vitro culture of stem cells. “The industry has a strong interest in the cell growth technologies needed for tissue and organ transplantation,” said Paru Deshpande, IMEC's director of life sciences.
The project is also the first time TEL has sent researchers to IMEC. These two organizations have been working together on semiconductor R&D for many years. The new headphones feature two IMEC-designed chips.
